You may have heard of it, but what does this compound do? Octane is a hydrocarbon. That does not occur naturally in nature. It is produced during the distillation of crude oil along with many other hydrocarbons. These Octane hydrocarbons are separated from the others using heat, because different hydrocarbons have different boiling points. Octane is a colorless liquid, and does not have a distinguishing appearance since it is almost always mixed with another compound making up gasoline.
