The largest island is over 4. 083 square miles with 266 miles of coastline, and is believed to be the first Hawaiian Island discovered by Polynesians. The island is home to numerous ancient Hawaiian temples and is known as the birthplace of Kamehameha 1, also referred to as Kamehameha The Great, whose signal accomplishment was the unification of the Hawaiian Islands under his rule.

It is easy to see where Kauai gets its nickname, because there is rich tropical foliage everywhere you look, complimented by spectacular peaks, seasonal waterfalls and pristine beaches. Kauai is the northernmost and fourth largest of the Hawaiian archipelago, and has just over 64,000 residents. This was the first populated island and is geologically the oldest.

Maui retains a rural setting because of its agricultural heritage. The rustic setting is also enhanced by numerous natural waterfalls and the fact that its shores are visited by over 3,000 humpback whales every winter.

Because of its fine harbors, Oahu became the political, economic, military, educational and cultural center for the state. By 1850 the Hawaiian royal court had moved permanently to Honolulu, which has since been the seat of government for the monarchy, republic, territory and state.
