As a violist, I am well aware of how the viola is perceived in the musical community. It is often looked down upon on the butt of every joke with the reputation of being merely a filler in ensembles. As I witness this behavior and the makeup of the majority of violists, I am compelled to ask why this is. Consequently, my research focus is on the evolution of the role of the viola over time.
